Multiplying & Dividing by 10, 100, 1000 : Text PDF Print E-mail

Multiplying and dividing numbers by 10, 100 or 1000 is very easy, it is simply a matter of moving the digits to the left or right, for example:

Multiplying - here is our basic number

245

x 10 digits move 1 place to the left 245 x10=2450
x 100  digits move 2 places to the left 245x
100 24500
x 1000 digits move 3 places to the left  245 x1000 245000

Dividing - here is our basic number
  342000

÷10 digits move 1 place to the right 342000 ÷10
=
34200
÷100  digits move 2 place to the right 342000÷100 =
 3420
÷10000
digits move 3 place to the right 342000÷1000=
 342

The same is true of decimals too ...

x10
digits move 1  place to the left 1.7x10=
 17
x100 digits move 2  places to the left 2.3
x100=  230
x1000 digits move 3  places to the left  4.61000= 4600

 ÷10 digits move 1  place to the right  1.7 ÷10= 0.17
÷100 digits move 2  places to the right  2.3 ÷100
=0.023
÷1000 digits move 3  places to the right  4.6÷1000=0.0046
